Resilient Region

⸺ A valley blossoms

The Schwarzatal, one of the oldest nature reserves in Germany, was a cherished holiday destination, especially during the GDR era. However, after the political changes, the economy stagnated, leading many people to leave. Tourism came to a standstill. Yet, this cultural landscape, adorned with architectures reflecting its past summer retreats, boasts rich natural experiences and history. How can this treasure regain its status as a sought-after holiday spot, offering a thriving home for its residents while tackling the looming threat of climate change?

In 2011, the initiative Zukunftswerkstatt Schwarzatal emerged as a network of dedicated citizens, aiming to revive positivity in the region after years of decline. Since 2017, it has evolved into an established association.

The initiative responded to the IBA Thuringia´s call for projects titled 'Zukunft StadtLand' in 2014, applying with the project idea 'Resilient Schwarzatal,' long before the concept of resilience gained widespread attention.

From the IBA candidate 'Resilient Schwarzatal,' several IBA projects emerged. They bolster the civil society forces in the region and bring new actors into the valley. The project participants hope for an enhancement of democracy and social cohesion. Furthermore, there's a need for a fundamental shift in mindset regarding sustainable infrastructure and construction methods in the valley. The existing resources should be conserved and repurposed, particularly the many vacant houses in the region.

The IBA projects in the valley focus on creating a cross-municipal, sustainable landscape with pilot projects such as Wasserfrische, highlighting the historical centerpiece of the region—Schloss Schwarzburg —as a site commemorating democracy. There's also emphasis on the Sommerfrische architecture represented by  Haus Bräutigam and Haus Döschnitz. along with Bahnhof des Ortsteils Rottenbach in Königsee as the gateway to Schwarzatal. These initiatives are showcased and discussed publicly through the annual Tag der Sommerfrische  and the regional conference called "Schwarzburger Gespräche".
