Building Culture made in Thuringia: Climate-friendly building with wood
To the spectrum of IBA projects comes a new concerted initiative to develop a culture of timber construction. Thuringia is a state with large densely wooded areas and an abundance of the climate-friendly raw material. Where it lags behind, however, is in the processing stages. Numerous parties are now actively striving to establish a stable and sustainable value chain for forestry, timber production and construction. They range from the state-owned forestry management company ThüringenForst and the Thuringian State Advisory Council on Forestry and Timber Production to committed building developers and forward-looking architects. Until 2023, the IBA Thüringen presents a window of opportunity for innovative timber construction and its development into an internationally recognised hallmark of the federal state. The Timber Prototype House in Apolda and the Sh/leep barn in Bedheim are just two examples that illustrate its potential. Local economic cycles and distinctive regional architecture represent an opportunity to strengthen the resilience and identity of rural regions.
