Sommerfrische in local history museum: Modern vacationing in traditional timber-frame architecture

How can the once-popular tourist destination of the Schwarzatal attract visitors back to the region? Lina Maria Mentrup, an architect from Jena, has set the ball rolling with an economical insertion within the beautiful but no longer inhabited building of the local history museum in Döschnitz.
Her design for a modern furnished apartment in the historic listed building is the first of the IBA’s ‘Sommerfrische’ projects in the Schwarzatal valley. With carefully measured, sensitive interventions, the project demonstrates how empty houses in the region can be economically revived for use while respecting the historical building fabric. Completed in April 2018, the first guests from Jena took up residence on the day it opened. The apartment has since been booked out throughout the summer weekends as a base from which to explore the region. The conversion of further rooms in the museum is planned.
The IBA project represents a first important step towards reactivating vacant buildings and attracting new visitors to the Schwarzatal.
